National City, California, August 14, 1956
Adjourned meeting of August 14, 1956 of the City Council was called
to order by Mayor Hodge at 8:00 P.M. o'clock, Council members pre-
sent: Hart, Heck, Hollingsworth, Hodge. Council members absent:
Fessman.
ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICIALS present: Alston, Lill.
The meeting was opened with pledge of allegiance to the Flag, fol-
lowed by invocation by Mayor Hodge.
CITY CLERK ALSTON reported that this meeting was adjourned for the
hearing of the Fifth Street, 1911 Act.
Protests filed were as follows; Helene H. Treahy, August 7, 1956;
Wilbur D. Treahy, August 7, 1956; Anthony 8 Lessie Camilla, August
5, 1956; and Mrs. Geo R. Burke, August 7, 1956. Mrs. Ralph E.
White filed a protest on August 7, 1956 and withdrew it on August
14, 1956. City Engineer Lill reported that protests against the
Fifth Street 1911 Act is less than 20%. Moved by Heck, seconded by
Hart, that if there were no further protests, the hearing be closed,
and the City Attorney continue the project with the necessary reso-
lutions. Carried, by the following vote to -wit: Ayes: Hart, Heck,
Hollingsworth, Hodge. Nays: None. Absent: Fessman.
CITY MANAGER BIRD stated that, to give adequate hearing to the
people on Fifth Street, those that were in favor of the project, and
those that were opposed to the project, the City Council deemed it
advisable, and so ordered that a continued hearing be held at night
so the people of Fifth Street could attend the meeting. Tonight we
have three, two ladies and a gentleman, who are interested and who
have accepted the invitation to the hearing. The remainder of the
people have not appeared. It shows explicitedly to me that these
night meetings are not necessary in the majority of instances.
COUNCILMAN HART AND COUNCILMAN HECK both stated their feelings were
in accord with Mr. Bird's. COUNCILWOMAN HOLLIN3S':'fORTH stated the
City Council was to represent the people and we should bear it in
mind; there were times when people cannot get off in the day time
without sacrificing a day's pay or inconvenience from some other
matter.
Moved by Heck, seconded by Hart that the meeting be closed. Carried
all the Council present voting aye. Meeting closed at 8:13 P.M.
o'clock.
