Regular meeting of the City Council was called to order by Mayor
Pritz at 7:30 A, II. Councilmen present: Cordingly, Newberry,
Fritz, Councilmen absent: Adams, Thatcher,

the minutes of the regular meeting of August 5, 1947, be dispen-

REPORT OF THE PLANNING C3?MISSION was read, and the following
petitions were denied: Clarence E, Morrie to operate a general
contracting business, consisting of office, warehouse, equip-
ment storage and shop on the northwest corner of 30th Street and
J Avenue; Belle Barber IIoover to change area of rear and front
yard at 505 E, 7th Street; written request from Mr, Schauffele
and Mr, Naselus, requesting the City to close the alley between
Lets 16 to 12, Block Be Beermaker's Sub„ 20 Acre Lot 1, * Sec-
tion 133. Moved by Newberry, seconded by Cordingly, that the
report be accepted, Carried, all Councilmen present votin3 eye,
MRS, BELLE li)JVZ , 505 7th Street, was present and appealed to
the Council to grant her request for a zone variance which tho
Planning Commission denied, Mrs, Hoover stated that she will
forego the porch on the front of the house as it would be out
of line with the other buildings on the avenue, Engineer Ireland
was present and stated that the Planning Commission did not
have a clear picture of the request and are in favor of granting
the request provided Mrs, Hoover will omit the sun porch,

fill two vacancies for the position of Maintenance Man in the

RESOLUTION NJ, 4457 was read, authorizing the appointment of
R, R, Shotwell and Morgan Cordcau,•as probationary maintenance
men on the Street Department, effective August 18, 1947, Salary
0180,00 per month, St, Supt, Finnerty recommended the appoint-
ments, ?coved by Newberry, seconded by Cordin3ly, that the

seconded by Newberry, that the application be granted, provided

the building is brought up to the requirements of the Building
Inspector and is completed within six months from this date,

ZLLY01F ITZ announced that it was 8:00 P, M, o'clock and the bids
on vitrified sewer pipe would be opened at 'that time, Bid
from Gladdin;, McBoan and Company was read, etatin•e that delivery
will begin November 1, 1948, and reserve the right to increase
and decrease prices at time of delivery, Pacific Clay Products
bid was read, stating that delivery will start July 1, 1949,
and prices will be those which are in effect at time of delivery,

tabled and Administrative Officer Dickson try to obtain maximum
prices from the two companies. Mayor Fritz inquired whether it
would be feasible to use cement pipe. Engineer Ireland stated
that the plans call for vitrified pipe as concrete pipe was
not obtainable at the time the plans were drawn, but the City
has concrete sewer pipe which has been in use for nearly thirty
years and has proven very satisfactory and recommended it for
this job, Mayor ?rite suggested that Administrative Officer
Dickson get estimates on concrete pipe,

was read, stating that he is building a house on Lot 38, Hills
of Paradise, and when he applied for a water meter, the water
company informed him that he will have to run a water Linc from
the corner of llth Street and Paradise Drive, which will
necessitate an casement from the City, Engineer Ireland suggest-.

RESOLUTION NO, 4458 was read, authorizing Attorney Campbell,
Engineer Ireland and St, Supt, Finnerty to draw up an easement
that will protect the City in every manner, to allow Robert L.
Townsend to run a water line from Lot 38, Hills of Paradise, to
the corner of llth Street and Paradise Drive, Moved by Newberry,
seconded by Cordingly, that the Resolution be adopted, Carried,

questing permission to erect two direction signs, to be at 24th

ADMINISTRATIVE )DICER DICKS)N suggested that it is a 3ood
time for the Council to consider eQ uniform type of sign to be
used throughout the City,
REPORT ?ROM CITY ENGINEER IRELAND was read, submitting an estimate
cost for grading a portion of National Avenue from 18th to 30th
Streets and the construction of sidewalks and curbs thereon,
Moved by Newberry, seconded by Thatcher, that the report be
accepted, Carried, by the following vote to -wit: Ayes: Rew-
berry, Cordingly, Thatcher, yritz, Nays: none,
Administrative Officer Dickson reported that the State Highway
Department has agreed to remove the trees from 18th to 30th
Street on National Avenue,
RESOLUTION N0, 4459 was read, authorizing Mayor Gilbert E, Fritz,
on behalf of the City, to enter into a contract with the U. S.
Navy Purchasing Office for sewer services on 75 housing units at

Naval Defense Housing Unit #1. and 333 Homoja Huts at Homoja
Housing Project #1, adjacent to the Naval Station, San Diego,
California, said contract known as Los Angeles Contract N123s-
43338, Said rate to be 47,56 per unit per year, Moved by New-

RESOLUTION NO, 4460 was read, accepting quit claim deeds from

ADMtINIST'RATIVE OFFICER DICKSON requested permission to advertise
for bids on a 1* ton truck chassis for the Fire Department, which
was included in their budget, Moved by Thatcher, seconded by

ADMINISTRATIVE 0"PFICfl DICCSON requested permission to advertise
for bids on a tractor -dump truck to coat approximately 01,200.00
for the Park Department, which is included in their budget,

RESOLUTION N0, 4463 was read, authorizing the transfer of
$5,00000 from the General Fund to the Library Fund, Which
constitutes a loan and must be repaid before the end of the fiscal

ADMINISTRATIVE ):'?ICER DICtSON stated that the City has tax title_
on 10 Acre Lot 7, i Section 154, and Block 2, 10 Acre Lot 8, a
Section 154, and suggested that the City exercise option with the
County and purchase the land, Moved by Newberry, seconded by
Cordingly, that Attorney Campbell and City Clerk Rogers follow
through and purchase the above land, Carried, all Councilmen
