HomeMy WebLinkAbout1947 11-19 CC ADJ MIN108 National City, California, November 19, 194+7 Adjourned meeting of November 18, 1947, of the City Council was called to order by Mayor Fritz at 7:30 P. M. Councilmen present: Adams, Cordingly, Newberry, Thatcher, Fritz. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER DICKSON reported on his telephone con- versation to Sacramento with officials of the State Retirement System, and stated that it would be impossible for the City to do anything in regard to an election until they adopt the Res- olution of Intention. Mayor Fritz suggested that the special election be held as early in January as possible. Councilman Adams stated that he was in favor of putting the retirement system on the ballot at the General Election. Councilman Newberry stated that the employees do not want the retirement system on the general election ballot as it could be used as a political football. Mayor Fritz stated that under Civil Service the employees are not allowed to campaign in an election but could openly support the retirement system on a special election. Councilman Adams stated that he thought the employees were wrong in thinking that the bill would be used as a political football in a general election. Provisions adopted by the Council to apply in the retirement contract are as follows: Moved by Newberry, seconded by That- cher, that the retirement age of 60 years, other than the Policemen and Firemen, which will be 55 years, be adopted. Car- ried, all Councilmen present voting aye. Moved by Newberry, seconded by Adams, that the employees upon retirement receive per month 1/60 of their average salary received in the five years previous to retirement, but not to exceed $200.00 per month, 1 109 Moved by Newberry, seconded by Cordingly, that the City not guarantee a percentage upon retirement. Carried, all Council- men present voting aye. Moved by Newberry, seconded by Thatcher, that benefits of prior service be given and the 25 year pay plan be adopted. Carried, all Councilmen present voting aye. Moved by Newberry, seconded by Adams, that a minimum allowance of $60.00 per month be paid upon retirement. Carried, all Council- men present voting aye. Moved by Adams, seconded by Newberry, that a $300.00 death benefit be paid after employment. Carried, all Councilmen present voting aye. Moved by Adams, seconded by Newberry, that compensation be provided as computed on tables under said law. Carried, all Councilmen present voting aye. Moved by Newberry, seconded by Cordingly, that the City Clerk be authorized and directed to sign the Retirement System petition. Carried, all Councilmen present voting aye. ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER DICKSON stated that it would be impossible for him to take his vacation until sometime after the first of the year, and requested permission to do so at that time. Moved by Thatcher, seconded by Newberry, that Mr. Dickson's request be granted. Carried, all Councilmen present voting aye. Moved by Cordingly, seconded by Adams, that the meeting be closed.
