Resmlar meeting of the Citlr Council called to order by
the Ma7cr. Councilmen present: Christman, dordingly, Newberry,
Frity. Councilman Thatcher absent.
Minutes of regular meeting of July 18, 1944, read and approved.
Administrative officials present: 'Jansar_t, Bird, Campbell,
Bates, Ireland, Bonneli, Finnerty, Fuson, Gautereaux, Rogers.
Bills audited by the Finance Committee, presented:

Moved by Cordir31v, seconded by Christman, that the bills be
allowed and warrants ordered drawn for same. Carried, all
Councilmen present voting aye.

✓W. M. BROOKS PROTEST OPT THE INSTALLATION OF CONCRETE PEDESTAL
by the Yellow Cab Co. at 8th Street & National Avenue, was read
and laid over until the next meeting.
✓ H. G. MILLER, PASTOR OF PENTECOSTAL TABERNACLE, REQUEST FOR
EXEMPTION ON CHURCH PROPERTY after the time limit had elapsed, was
read. Attorney Campbell ruled that according to State Law, the
permission_
City cannot grant/after the time has expired. The communication
was ordered filed.
L. E. DILBECK'S REQUEST TO ivl0'TE A HOUSE FROM SAN DIEGO TO
l8th Street & National Avenue, 10 acre lot 3, ;?• section 153,
was read and referred to the Building Inspector.
/ Communication from Chief of Police requesting the removal of
William Harville from the payroll, effective July 31, 1944, was
read and ordered filed.
RESOLUTION NO. 2665, appointing Emanuel Joseph Veverka and
James Roy Jennings to act as special police officers without
compensation, effective August 1, 1944, was read. Moved by New-
berry, seconded by Cordingly, that the Resolution be adopted.
Carried, all Councilmen present voting aye.

.--CONTRACT WITH U. S. NAVY TO CLEAN THE STREETS IN TEE NA'TY
DEFENSE HOUSINC UNIT # 1, was read, and referred tc the Attorney.
Attorney Campbell ruled that the contract was not agreeable and
the City would prepare a contract and present to the Navy.
-'--SURETY BOYD OF CHILE_ OF PCIT_CE FOR $2000.00 was presented.
Attorney Campbell ruled the bond should be $5000.00 and the
City Clerk was instructed to order same.
FIRE CHIEF 9IRD RECOMMENDED TEAT THE CITY ACCEPT TT'E FIRE
INSURANCE POLICES on the fire trucks. Moved by Cordingly,
seconded by Christman, that the polices be accented. Carried,
all Councilmen present voting aye.
STATE BOARD OF EQ,UALIZAT'_OPT NOTIFICATION OF THE APPLICATION
of Eberhard F. Weerts & Lyman B. Lucore of the Cafe La Maze for
liquor license, was read and referred to the Chief of Police.
✓ Copy of letter to San Clauser from Pacific Automobile Ins.
Co. relative to the cancellation of the insurance July 30, 1944,
on the fleet of t're Yellow Cab Co., was read and referred to
the Chief of Police. Councilman Newberry suggested that the
City write a letter of thanks to the Pacific Automobile Ins. Co.
for their cooperation.
i RESOLUTION PLO. 2667,, appointing, Frank W. Rogers, City
Assessor, to work with the County Assessor's Office in apprais-
ing tax deeded property in National City. was read. Moved by
Christman, seconded by Thatcher, that the Resolution be adopted.
Carried, all Councilmen present voting aye.
RESOLUTION NO. 2666, directing notice inviting sealed pro-
posals, National City Lighting District No. 1, was read. Moved
Thatcher, seconded by Christman, that the Resolution be adopted.
Carried, all Councilmen present voting aye.
/RESOLUTION NO. 2668, authorizing the transfer of $500.00
from the General Fund to Civilian Defense Fund, was read. Moved
Newberry, seconded by Cordingly, that the Resolution be adopted.

City Clerk called attention of the Council/that the lst
of August the personal tax roll should be turned over to the Tax
Collector, according to the tax ordinance, although in the past

the City Assessor continued to collect the personal taxes as he
receives the assessments from the County Assessor, through Sep-
tember. Moved by Christman, seconded by Cordingly, that the
City Assessor continue to collect the personal taxes, as in the
past. Carried, all Councilmen present voting aye.
Fire Chief Bird presented the possibilities of the paper
drive. Mr. & Mrs. Willis Brigms were present and told of their
assistance to the children of National City in the collection of
paper. Ivioved by Christman, seconded by Cordingly, that a vote
of thanks be extended to Mr. & Mrs. Briggs for their work in the
drive. IvIr..Howard P±iikk_elson was present and offered the use of
a truck two Sundays a month for the collection of papers. Mayor
Fritz referred the matter to Councilman Christman.
Communication of Allen P. Connell and Ellis E. Davies to op-
erate a card room at 18 8th Street, National City, was read.
Chief of Police Bates recommended that the application be denied.
Moved by Christman, seconded by Newberry, that the Chief of Police
recommendation be accepted. Carrie?, all Councilmen present vot-
ing aye.
Sorvmunication from the Federal Works Asency in regard to
Post War Planing, was read and ordered filed.
Attorney Campbell discussed the possibility of securing new
sewer facilities for the use of Paradise Valley Sanitarium. The
matter was held over for further discussion at the next regular
meeting.
✓Offer of James B. Abbey of a tract of 70 acres to the City
for $1500.00 was brought up by Attorney Campbell, and decision
on the matter laid over until the next regular meeting.
Attorney Campbell presented a bill of .$253.00 for special
services by Attorney Ratelle. Moved b-* Cording]y, seconded by
Newberry, that t rn bill be paid. Carried, all Councilmen present
voting a--e.
Moved by Corditiv, seconded by Thatcher, that the meeting
adjourn. Carried, al] Councilmen present voting aye.
