RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NATIONAL CITY OPPOSING NAVY ACQUISITION OF
PROPERTY WITHIN THE CITY
WHEREAS a significant portion of NAVAL STATION-SAN DIEGO
is located in the CITY OF NATIONAL CITY; and
WHEREAS the CITY and the NAVY have coexisted as good
neighbors for many years; and
WHEREAS the NAVY has stated its intention to acquire
thirty-two (32) additional acres of property within the CITY
through a land exchange with the PORT OF SAN DIEGO in order to
facilitate access to a new pier and support facilities; and
WHEREAS said acquisition and development will have the
following negative effects on the CITY OF NATIONAL CITY:
1. Traffic congestion and parking problems will
dramatically increase.
2. The CITY will experience a loss of all current
and future tax revenues generated by the
property.
3. The proposal would obstruct the CITY's plans
to develop a marina and other commercial
tourist uses nearby.
4. The CITY's efforts to attract America's Cup
syndicates would be jeopardized.
5. Heightened demands on police protection and
other CITY services would occur.
WHEREAS after review and due consideration of the NAVY's
proposal, it has been determined that access to the new pier and
all support facilities can be readily provided within the existing
confines of the NAVAL STATION.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the CITY OF NATIONAL
CITY is opposed to NAVY acquisition of any property within the
CITY's corporate limits, be it through lease, purchase, exchange
or any other method.
