HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 16,068RESOLUTION NO. 16,068 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY ENDORSING THE CHULA VISTA YACHT CLUB'S CHALLENGE FOR THE LITTLE AMERICA'S CUP WHEREAS, the waterfront area of the South Bay of San Diego has heretofore untapped potential to attract substantial recreational, competitive and marine -related interests; and WHEREAS, a citizens committee consisting of South Bay business, tourist interests, civic leaders, chamber of commerce executives, public officials, and organized boating clubs have been meeting over the course of the past six months to devise a plan to bring the opportunities along the South Bay shoreline to the forefront of attention; and WHEREAS, international sporting competitions are becoming ever more prominent as a vehicle by which to market, advertise and promote a locale such as the South Bay to statewide, national and international interests; and WHEREAS, the waters of the South Bay have long been known to offer the best catamaran sailing conditions in the world; and WHEREAS, a concerted effort has already begun by internationally known yacht racing competitors and designers to spearhead an effort to challenge for the International Catamaran Challenge trophy (the Little America's Cup) currently held by the McCrae, Australia, Yacht Club. WHEREAS, the Chula Vista Yacht Club, working with conceptual support from the Coronado Yacht Club, the Coronado Cays Yacht Club, and the Naval Sailing Club, have joined with the South Bay citizens committee to formalize a South Bay syndicate plan; and WHEREAS, this South Bay Syndicate Organizing Committee has voted unanimously to formally issue the challenge under the burgee of the Chula Vista Yacht Club; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of National City endorses the challenge to be submitted to the International Catamaran "C" Class Catamaran Association by the Chula Vista Yacht Club for a match race competition scheduled to take place in January, 1991, in McCrae, Australia.
