HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 15,070RESOLUTION NO. 15,070 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY TO THE CALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION DECLARING THE WILLINGNESS OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY TO PARTICIPATE WITH THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO AND THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN ARTERIAL CONNECTOR BETWEEN INTERSTATE 5 AND INTERSTATE 805 WHEREAS, State transportation officials appear on the verge of abandoning and disposing of the right-of-way for the long planned Freeway 252 link connecting Interstate 5 and Interstate 805; and WHEREAS, the majority of the traffic displaced by the abandoned 252 Freeway will be forced to utilize surface streets primarily through National City; and WHEREAS, the abandonment of the 252 Freeway will result in "extreme congestion" on existing freeway segments within National City; and WHEREAS, National City is incapable of accommodating the region traffic entirely on its surface streets without suffering irreparable harm; and WHEREAS, a connecting arterial road through the proposed Freeway 252 corridor will accomplish the greatest mitigation for the abandoned freeway, minimize additional unnecessary displacement of residents and businesses by condemnation, and enhance redevelopment possibilities for the area as desired by the City of San Diego; and WHEREAS, National City is prepared and willing to assist in the construction of such a connecting road as a real and practical indication of our concerns and desperation to save our community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of National City does hereby indicate its willingness to assist CALTRANS and the City of San Diego in the construction of an acceptable arterial connector through the 252 freeway corridor between Interstate 5 and Interstate 805 by contributing up to $1,000,000 toward that worthwhile goal.
