RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NATIONAL CITY AUTHORIZING THE SUPPORT OF A
NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL AND
HOCKEY FRANCHISE IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY
WHEREAS, the County of San Diego is the fourth most populous
county in the United States, and the City of San Diego is the sixth
largest city in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the increasingly diverse population residing in San
Diego affords the variety of interests and pursuits which are necessary
to support professional sporting events; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of San Diego County have shown out-
standing support to the National Football League's San Diego Chargers,
Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres, and the Major Indoor Soccer
League's San Diego Sockers, which are the diverse professional teams
currently located in San Diego; and
WHEREAS, San Diego was lauded as the host of Super Bowl XXII,
the internationally recognized culmination of the 1988 professional
football season; and
WHEREAS, San Diego County is the only major metropolitan area
of its size in the United States which does not currently host a
National Basketball Association franchise or a National Hockey League
franchise; and
WHEREAS, there presently exist qualified individuals who have
expressed a keen interest in locating such franchises in San Diego
County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the
City of National City requests that the Commissioners of the National
Hockey League and the National Basketball Association grant the approval
necessary to operate their respective franchises in San Diego.
PASSED and ADOPTED this 27th day of March, 1990.
