RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING RANGE
FOR THE NEW CLASSIFICATION OF CRIME SCENE SPECIALIST
WHEREAS, the Civil Service Commission of the City of National City at
its regular meeting of July 12, 1990, authorized the amendment of the
classification plan of the City by the establishment of the new classification Crime
Scene Specialist;
WHEREAS, the compensation and benefits for this classification should be
consistent with assigned responsibilities and duties.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this classification shall be
assigned to the following biweekly salary range:
(112) $1052.54 - $1105.15 - $1160.42 - $1218.46 - $1279.38

CLASS SPECIFICATION
CRIME SCENE SPECIALIST
DEFINITION
Under general supervision to respond to secured crime scenes, interview witnesses and victims,
collect and take custody of evidence, prepare reports and to do related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Crime Scene Specialist is a civilian employee who is not involved in direct law enforcement.
The Specialist is not expected to be exposed to hazardous conditions.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL DUTIES*
Responds to requests for assistance at secured crime scenes; assists in the investigation at crime
scenes; interviews witnesses and victims; collects and preserves evidence; uses shorthand or
speedwriting to record information; composes and types crime reports using wordprocessing
equipment; photographs crime scenes; prepares displays for courtroom presentations; testifies in
court; inputs and retrieves data utilizing personal computer; attends off -site training programs to
develop and maintain necessary technical knowledge and skills; establishes and maintains
effective working relationship with Sheriff's crime laboratory; provides back-up for other related
functions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the
ability to perform the duties of this classification. An example would be graduation from high
school including or supplemented by courses in modern office practices and equipment and three
years of full time experience in secretarial or clerical work involving frequent contact with the
public. Additional relevant education may be substituted for up to two years of the required
experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of office methods, practices, procedures, and modern
automated equipment; correct English including vocabulary, grammar, and spelling; modern filing
and indexing methods. Ability to perform secretarial and clerical work involving the use of
independent judgement and requiring acuracy; learn complex regulations and procedures; interact
effectively with persons from widely varying backgrounds under stressful conditions including
members of the public, law enforcement officers and other employees; prepare accurate and
complete reports; testify in legal proceedings; take and transcribe information received from
witnesses and victims; take dictation at a 'rate of 80 words per minute and type 55 net words
per minute from clear, legible copy; operate word processor and personal computer; understand
and carry -out oral and written directions and assignments without close supervision; and properly
handle highly confidential information. The ability to use a second language on the job is
desirable but not required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required at time of appointment. Must meet
standards of integrity and trustworthiness required for law enforcement related activities.
