HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 16,361RESOLUTION NO. 16,361 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY SUPPORTING UNIFICATION OF NATIONAL CITY'S SCHOOLS INTO THE NATIONAL CITY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT WHEREAS, the City of National City takes great pride in the schools of our community and cares a great deal about our young students; and WHEREAS, the proposed unification of National City's schools into the National City Unified School District would benefit the students of National City by forming a cohesive, K-12 system that would provide continuity for all students; and WHEREAS, unification would provide for a more manageable district of 11,000 students, a number that fits the state guidelines for an ideal -sized district of 10,000 to 15,000; and WHEREAS, unification would provide local control of National City's secondary schools where now there are no National City representatives on the Sweetwater Union High School District Board; and WHEREAS, unification would increase the revenue limit for National City schools, improving funding for National City schools; and WHEREAS, the citizens of National City have clearly indicated their support for unification in a San Diego County Office of Education survey by a margin of almost three to one; and WHEREAS, more than 2,400 registered voters of National City signed petitions calling for unification during two one - day drives. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of National City, that the City Council does hereby support unification and the formation of the National City Unified School District. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council urges the San Diego County Committee on School District Organization to vote to approve the petition presented by the citizens of National City and to recommend a "yes" vote to the California State Board of Education.
