HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 96-42RESOLUTION NO. 96-42 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY SUPPORTING AB 2974 (OLBERG), WHICH WOULD REQUIRE PAYMENT OF BOOKING FEES OWED PRIOR TO REGISTRATION OF A VEHICLE WHEREAS, Assemblyman Olberg has introduced AB 2974, which would require the Department of Motor Vehicles to refuse to renew the registration of any vehicle if the registered owner or lessee has been ordered by a court to pay the criminal justice administrative fees ("booking fees") authorized by the Government Code, and the fees have not been paid; and WHEREAS, the City of National City annually pays from its general fund an amount in excess of $400,000 for booking fees; and WHEREAS, payment for booking fees negatively impacts the City's ability to pay for public safety and other needed services in the community; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of National City endorses the concept underlying AB 2974 of placing the burden of booking costs on the perpetrator, rather than upon the taxpayer. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of National City that the City Council hereby supports AB 2974. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to forward this resolution to Senator Peace and Assemblywoman Ducheny, at the earliest date possible after its adoption.
