RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY
SUPPORTING AB 532, THE ONE -HANDGUN -
PER -MONTH ANTI -GUN RUNNING BILL
WHEREAS, gunshot wounds are the cause of death of more Californians,
particularly teenagers, than are car crashes; and
WHEREAS, handguns were used to murder 11,198 people in this country
in 1995 (FBI) and to commit more than 1.1 million violent crimes in 1993 (Bureau of
Justice Statistics); and
WHEREAS, many guns used in crimes are purchased in bulk by ruthless
gun traffickers, who resell them on the street at profits as high as 400% to juveniles
and criminals who cannot buy handguns over the counter because of California's back-
ground -check system; and
WHEREAS, there currently is no California law that restricts the number
of handguns an individual can buy at one time, leading to purchases of 50, 100 or 500
handguns at once; and
WHEREAS, the One -Handgun -Per -Month Anti -Gun Running Bill
(AB 532 by Wally Knox) would prohibit gun runners from buying handguns in large
quantities and unloading them on the illegal black market by limiting customers to one
handgun purchase per month; and
WHEREAS, AB 532 is strongly supported by the California Police
Chiefs' Association and other major law enforcement organizations because the
legislation will reduce illegal street sales of handguns.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of National City that the City Council urges its California Assembly Member, Denise
Ducheny, and the California State Legislature to pass the One -Handgun -Per -Month
Anti -Gun Running Bill (AB 532).
