HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 97-65RESOLUTION NO. 97-65 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY SUPPORTING AB 532, THE ONE -HANDGUN - PER -MONTH ANTI -GUN RUNNING BILL WHEREAS, gunshot wounds are the cause of death of more Californians, particularly teenagers, than are car crashes; and WHEREAS, handguns were used to murder 11,198 people in this country in 1995 (FBI) and to commit more than 1.1 million violent crimes in 1993 (Bureau of Justice Statistics); and WHEREAS, many guns used in crimes are purchased in bulk by ruthless gun traffickers, who resell them on the street at profits as high as 400% to juveniles and criminals who cannot buy handguns over the counter because of California's back- ground -check system; and WHEREAS, there currently is no California law that restricts the number of handguns an individual can buy at one time, leading to purchases of 50, 100 or 500 handguns at once; and WHEREAS, the One -Handgun -Per -Month Anti -Gun Running Bill (AB 532 by Wally Knox) would prohibit gun runners from buying handguns in large quantities and unloading them on the illegal black market by limiting customers to one handgun purchase per month; and WHEREAS, AB 532 is strongly supported by the California Police Chiefs' Association and other major law enforcement organizations because the legislation will reduce illegal street sales of handguns. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of National City that the City Council urges its California Assembly Member, Denise Ducheny, and the California State Legislature to pass the One -Handgun -Per -Month Anti -Gun Running Bill (AB 532).
