HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 2006-111RESOLUTION NO. 2006-111 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY IN SUPPORT OF SDG&ES SUNRISE POWERLINK TRANSMISSION LINE PROJECT, AND URGING THE CALIFORNIA PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION TO EXPEDITIOUSLY APPROVE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PROJECT WHEREAS, the Sunrise Powerlink transmission line project (Sunrise Powerlink) is a proposed electric transmission line that would deliver reliable power and help reduce overall energy costs for San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) customers; and WHEREAS, the Sunrise Powerlink will provide access to clean, renewable sources of energy located in the Imperial Valley, including solar, wind and geothermal power generation; and WHEREAS, the delivery of reliable power to homes and businesses is critical to the City of National City economic competitiveness and quality of life; and WHEREAS, access to cost-effective electricity is vital to ensure continued economic prosperity and strengthen the citys job base; and WHEREAS, the construction of new energy infrastructure projects, including the Sunrise Powerlink, are needed in Southern California to meet the projected demands for power in the region; and WHEREAS, the Sunrise Powerlink will save SDG&E ratepayers more than $100 Million per year by reducing the region's dependence on older, local power plants that are inefficient and expensive to operate; and WHEREAS, when completed, the Sunrise Powerlink will provide enough energy to serve more than 650,000 homes; and WHEREAS, the completion of the Sunrise Powerlink will help SDG&E meet requirements to have 20% of its ;power come from renewable sources by the year 2010; and WHEREAS, the City of National City supports the increased use of renewable sources of energy. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of National City supports the Sunrise Powerlink and the delivery of reliable and renewable energy to the regions.
