HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 11,989RESOLUTION NO. 11,989 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY OPPOSING THE NUCLEAR INITIATIVE TO BE CONSIDERED BY THE VOTERS OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA AT THE JUNE 8, 1976 DIRECT PRIMARY ELECTION AND URGING REJECTION OF SAME WHEREAS, most of our electric power is generated by oil and gas, and expanded use of these fuels to generate greater amounts of electricity is not considered practicable due to increasing shortage of these fuels and their increas- ing costs, and WHEREAS, a safe, dependable source of power from uranium is available to substitute for oil and gas generation by employing effective and reliable nuclear reactor systems, and WHEREAS, nuclear generation plants can greatly reduce the amount of air pollution in the state of California, and WHEREAS, the expanded use of nuclear fuel can reduce the burden of importing vast amounts of expensive oil from unreliable sources, and WHEREAS, the nuclear initiative on the June 1976 ballot would, if passed, virtually ban the construction of nuclear power plants in California and place severe limita- tions on the operation of existing plants that have already been proven safe, and WHEREAS, said ban would have serious economic consequences for all of us because existing nuclear facilities would have to be paid for anyway, and additional expenditures would have to be made to maintain existing energy uses and generating capability at far greater cost to all the people of the state. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of National City, as follows: That this City Council considers the rejection of the Nuclear Initiative which will be considered by the electorate on June 8, 1976, to be in the best interest of the State of California, and of the City of National City. 1976.
