A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NATIONAL CITY OPPOSING THE NUCLEAR INITIATIVE TO
BE CONSIDERED BY THE VOTERS OF THE STATE OF
CALIFORNIA AT THE JUNE 8, 1976 DIRECT PRIMARY
ELECTION AND URGING REJECTION
OF SAME
WHEREAS, most of our electric power is generated
by oil and gas, and expanded use of these fuels to generate
greater amounts of electricity is not considered practicable
due to increasing shortage of these fuels and their increas-
ing costs, and
WHEREAS, a safe, dependable source of power from
uranium is available to substitute for oil and gas generation
by employing effective and reliable nuclear reactor systems,
and
WHEREAS, nuclear generation plants can greatly
reduce the amount of air pollution in the state of California,
and
WHEREAS, the expanded use of nuclear fuel can
reduce the burden of importing vast amounts of expensive
oil from unreliable sources, and
WHEREAS, the nuclear initiative on the June 1976
ballot would, if passed, virtually ban the construction of
nuclear power plants in California and place severe limita-
tions on the operation of existing plants that have already
been proven safe, and
WHEREAS, said ban would have serious economic
consequences for all of us because existing nuclear facilities
would have to be paid for anyway, and additional expenditures
would have to be made to maintain existing energy uses and
generating capability at far greater cost to all the people
of the state.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council
of the City of National City, as follows:
That this City Council considers the rejection of
the Nuclear Initiative which will be considered by the
electorate on June 8, 1976, to be in the best interest of
the State of California, and of the City of National
City.
1976.
