HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 11,700RESOLUTION NO. 11,700 RESOLUTION OPPOSING SENATE BILL 275 GRANTING PUBLIC EMPLOYEES THE RIGHT TO STRIKE WHEREAS, Senate Bill 275 is intended to grant public employees the right to strike and to allow outside arbitrators to make decisions concerning wages and other benefits of public employees, and WHEREAS, said legislation would take vital decision -making power out of the hands of locally elected officials and pass those decisions over to non -elected persons who are not responsible to the public, and WHEREAS, Senate Bill 275 covers all public employees in the State of California, including policemen and firemen, and purports to lockout employees in a labor dispute, and WHEREAS, said bill would allow any issue over the level of vital public services to be the subject of closed door bargaining sessions, and WHEREAS, although this measure attempts to create an impasse mechanism which will avoid strikes, it includes no strike penalties which might be leveled against employees or organizations engaging in illegal or unfair strike activities, and WHEREAS, this measure includes nothing which would prohibit secondary job actions through which a small group of dissatisfied employees could close down the operations of an entire governmental agency, and WHEREAS, during any kind of labor controversey, the ability of the public agency to provide needed vital services would be substantially reduced; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of National City hereby opposes Senate Bill 275 and urges our legislators to become aware of the ultimate consequences of this legislation and oppose this bill. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be sent to all the legislators in San Diego County requesting them to vote no on Senate Bill 275.
