HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 11,611RESOLUTION NO. 11,611 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY URGING OPPOSITION TO PROPOSITION 17 WHEREAS, Proposition 17 on the November 5, 1974 Statewide ballot is intended to place public pressure on the U.S. Government to modify construction of the New Melones Dam Project, and WHEREAS, the New Melones Dam Project as now designed is to prevent flooding on the lower Stanislaus River, provide recreational facilities for a greater number of people, provide water for municipal and irrigation purposes, improve conservation of fish and wildlife, and generate needed hydroelectric power, and WHEREAS, completion of the New Melones Dam Project will also enhance water quality in the San Joaquin Delta which supplies water for the California Aqueduct that terminates in the Los Angeles Basin, and WHEREAS, the New Melones Dam Project as designed has received support from environmental and conservation interests in the area including the Audubon Society and the California Native Plant Society, and WHEREAS, U. S. District Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals have ruled in favor of the com- pletion of the New Melones Dam Project, and WHEREAS, the proponents of Proposition 17 are now using the ballot for the profit of a few rafting companies and the enjoyment of some rafting enthusiasts, at the expense of a greater number of California citizens, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of National City that the citizens of National City are hereby urged to vote NO on Proposition 17 on November 5, 1974, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be sent to all cities in California requesting their citizens to vote NO on Proposition 17.
