RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE SOUTHWARD EXTENSION OF
INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 15 TO MEXICAN BORDER
WHEREAS, the National System of Interstate and
Defense Highways consists of a nationwide network of the most
important highways, and
WHEREAS, Interstate 15 fromihe Canadian border
near Great Falls, Montana, to its present southerly terminus
at Colton, California, is one of the highways in the Inter-
state System, and
WHEREAS, the Federal Highway Act of 1968 added
1500 miles to the Interstate System for missing links, and
WHEREAS, the present Interstate 15 has a major
missing link and is incomplete as its southern terminus
should be at San Diego, California, near the Mexican border,
so that Interstate 15 will then be a complete north -south
highway from the Canadian border to the Mexican border, and
WHEREAS, an extension of Interstate 15 from Colton,
California to San Diego, California, via the present U.S.
395 from Colton, California to its junction with California
State Route 103, and thereafter along the present California
State Route 103 to its junction with Interstate 5 in the City
of San Diego, near the Mexican border is a logical, feasible,
and practical extension of Interstate 15 so as to make it a
complete route throughout its entire length and close the
missing link, and
WHEREAS, such an extension would then serve the im-
portant California cities of San Bernardino (population -
100,000), Riverside (population - 136,800), Escondido (pop-
ulation
- 31,650),
San Diego (population - 680,500), and
Tijuana, B.C. (population - 270,000) together with the counties
of San. Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego, and
WHEREAS, such an extension would serve such im-
portant military and defense establishments as March Air
Force Base, Miramar Naval Air Station, North Island Naval
Air Station, U. S. Naval Station and the U. S. Naval Am-
phibious Base, as well as other nearby important military
bases, such as Norton Air Force Base, George Air Force
Base, and Camp Pendleton Marine Base, and
WHEREAS, such an extension would result in a con-
nection withthe San Diego - Coronado Bridge now under con-
struction, and
WHEREAS, such an extension would result in a direct
connection with the Marine Terminals of the Port of San Diego,
greatly assisting all truckers and shippers throughout the
southwest United States;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council
of the City of National City as follows:
1. That the Council hereby supports the extension
of Interstate 15 southward from its present terminus at Colton,
California, to a junction with Interstate 5 in San Diego, Cal-
ifornia, along U.S. 395 and California State Route 103, and
2. That the Council urges the California State
Highway Engineer, the California Highway Commission and the
U. S. Bureau of Public Roads to adopt such an extension of
Interstate 15 at their earliest possible convenience and to
promptly allocate funds for its early construction.
