HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 8653RESOLUTION NO. 8653 RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A TRANS -BAY BRIDGE IN THE BAY OF SAN DIEGO WHEREAS, the subject of a trans -bay crossing has been under consideration for more than 38 years, and WHEREAS, the Department of Public Works and the State Toll Bridge Authority have found that a four -lane bridge linking the cities of San Diego and Coronado to be economically feasible, and such a bridge can be constructed at no cost to the taxpayer and no more cost to the motorist than he is presently paying, and WHEREAS, the economy of the City of National City is at present extremely depressed, and unemployment figures of San Diego County as a whole are alarmingly high, and WHEREAS, construction of such a bridge would pro- vide immediate employment for at least 300 working men under a three-year period and would provide a minimum of $60,000 worth of new construction within the immediate future as well as employment for an additional minimum of 400 workers under an eight -year period, and WHEREAS, the United States Navy in a statement by the Secretary of Defense voices no objection to a bridge span- ning San Diego Bay, and the Under -Secretary of the Navy has advised local officials that the Navy will not remove any op- eration because of construction of a bridge; NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the City Council of the City or National City hereby formally endorses such con- struction of a trans -bay bridge at the earliest possible date, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk is here- by directed to communicate such endorsement to the Governor of the State of California, the San Diego legislative dele- gation in both Sacramento and Washington D.C., to the State Division of Highways, the Department of Public Works, the Toll Bridge Authority and to the Secretaries of the Navy and Defense.
