HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 8453RESOLUTION NO. 8453 RESOLUTION URGING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE EAST BRANCH OF THE CALIFORNIA AQUEDUCT AND THE COMPLETION OF CONSTRUCTION BY 1972 WHEREAS, on February 26, 1963, by Resolution No. 8305 this City Council urged the simultaneous construction of the East and West Branches of the California Aqueduct and the com- pletion of such construction by 1972; and WHEREAS, since the adoption of said Resolution the Supreme Court of the United States has rendered a decision that may adversely affect the supply of Colorado River water avail- able to The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and, therefore, the supply of water available to the San Diego County Water Authority and the South Bay Irrigation District; and WHEREAS, the local water supply is completely inade- quate and water must be imported to supply the needs of the people within South Bay Irrigation District and the demand for water is increasing and will continue to increase in the Dis- trict; and WHEREAS, the availability of imported water from the East Branch of the California Aqueduct is of critical import- ance in order to insure an adequate supply of water for the residents of South Bay Irrigation District; and WHEREAS, the overwhelming support of the voters of South Bay Irrigation District and San Diego County was responsible for the passage of the $1,750,000,000 bond issue to finance the State Water Plan; and WHEREAS, as approved by the voters, the State Water Plan included the East Branch of the California Aqueduct to serve many parts of Southern California, including Antelope Valley, Coachella Valley, the County of San Bernardino, the County of Riverside, and the County of San Diego, all of which areas need this source of supply of water; and WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is seeking to delay the construction of the East Branch of the California Aqueduct until 1985; and WHEREAS, any delay in construction of the East Branch of the California Aqueduct would be detrimental to the best interests of South Bay Irrigation District and the afore- mentioned areas to be served by the East Branch. NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the City Council of the City of National City hereby urges the construction of the East Branch of the California Aqueduct and the completion of such construction by 1972 in order to insure an adequate supply of water for the people of South Bay Irrigation District and the other areas to be supplied by the East Branch. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be and is hereby authorized and directed to send a certified copy of this resolution to the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Water Authority and to such other persons and entities as are designated by the members of this City Council.
