HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 7896RESOLUTION NO. 7896 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF NATIONAL CITY, CALIFORNIA IN SUPPORT OF APPLICATION OF THE.SANTA FE RAILWAY COMPANY. WHEREAS, both The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company, and Southern Pacific Company, seek to acquire control of the Western Pacific Railroad Company; WHEREAS, the public and economic interest of the City of National City are directly related to the continuation of strong, competitive railroad service; WHEREAS, the necessity of maintaining railroad service competitive with that offered by the Southern Pacific Company was one of the basic reasons for the great reforms of one-half century ago under Governor Hiram Johnson, and in particular the creation of the California Railroad Commission, now known as the Public Utilities Commission; and WHEREAS, permitting the Southern Pacific Company to become owner of the Western Pacific Railroad Company would give that company a monopoly of certain routes to California. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of National City, California as follows: I. The City of National City gives its full support to the application of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company to the Interstate Commerce Commission for approval of its plan for con- trol of the Western Pacific Railroad Company under Finance Docket No. 21334. 2. That the Mayor of the City of National City be and hereby is authorized to verify and the City Attorney is authorized to file on behalf of the City of National City, a petition for leave to intervene in said proceeding No. 21334 in support of the application of The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company and in opposition to the application of the Southern Pacific Company in Finance Docket Application No. 21334, and to take all reasonable steps in the futherance of the interests of this City in the pro- ceedings before the Interstate Commerce Commission.
