HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC RESO 7951RESOLUTION NO.. 7951 'WHEREAS San Diego is proud of its Navy traditions, and its continuing important role with the Navy, and WHEREAS official Navy records indicate that San Diego is the place of birth Naval and origin ofnaviation, as shown in the fact that on December 23, 1910, Lt. T. G. Ellison waa the first naval officer ordered to flight instrdtotion, at the Glenn Curtiss Aviation Camp on North Island; and WHEREAS on January 26, 1911, San Diego was the scene of the first suooses- ful seaplane flight, made by Lt. Ellison's instructor, Glenn Curtiss, with takeoff and landing on the waters of San Diego say; and WHEREAS on April 12, 1911, Lt. Ellison completed his course of study in the care and operation of Curtiss aeroplanes and became also qualified to instruct others; and wHEREAS the plane Ellison used was the forbear of the Triad, first air- craft of the Navy, designated A-1, a plane ordered Pram Glenn Curtiss at a cost of 45,500 on May 8, 1911, which is naval aviation's birthday; and now THEitRFOBE BB IT RESOLVED THAT the San Diego Council of the Navy League of the United States requests that the Navy, in an appropriate marker on North Island, officially designate San Diego as the dirthploce of Naval Aviation, and that all appropriate publicity to this designation be given by San Diego and California eivic, fraternal and other organizations, including other Councils of the Navy League and by the Navy League itself. AND us IT FUliT1{Ea itESOLVED that this resolution be presented to the Secre- tary of the Navy, for his study, and that a copy go to the San Diego Chamber of Com- merce, so that it may share in activities directed to the obtaining of such a desig- nation for :pan Fieo.
