Deputy f. /i7sk•-/ F;6 171 0 CITY OF NATIONAL CITY OFFICE OF CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION National City, California Honorable City Council City of National City California Gentlemen: July 19, 1948 The Civil Service Commission recommends that the title of position and qualifications for City Library employees, as set up in our classification plan be changed as follows: CITY LIBRARIAN Maintaining and administering a system of library rules and regulations for the purpose of securing the proper use of the library by the public; familiarizing the public with the services the library is prepared to render; assigning and checking work; maintaining discipline and giving instruction in connection with the supervision of the staff; conducting staff meetings; ordering, accessing, cataloging, charging and discharging books and other library material; assisting readers in making effective use of library facilities; preparing and explaining budget estimate; handling correspondence; preparing annual and special reports and making recommendation to the library board. REQUIREMENTS IN EDUCATION Graduation from a college or university of recognized stand- ing and one year of training in an accredited library school and not less than two years of appropriate experience in a library of recognized standing. COMPENSATION 204.00 - $214.00 • ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN (Two Assistants in this Classification) ➢EFINITION OF DUTIES To assist City Librarian in the supervision and technical work involved in the administration of a city library. City Council EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS Page 2 July 19, 1948 Assisting members of the library staff with their more difficult problems and seeing that work is performed effectively; preparing technical reports; tabulating and analyzing statistics; helping readers in the library; reading books and book reviews and making suggestions regarding the selection and purchase of books; handling correspondence; acceptable proficiency in typing; knowledge of ordinary, -business procedure; acting as City Librarian in the absence of that official. REQUIREMENTS INN EDUCATION Children's Department: Two years in college or university of recognized standing; two years training in a library of recognized standing and at least one year in teaching or handling children's groups. Administrative: Two years in a college or university of recognized stand- ing; two years training in a library of recognized standing. COMPENSATION $157.00 - $167.00 - $177.00 Library Clerk DEFINITION OF DUTIES Under direction to do the work involved in operating a library. EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS Charging and discharging of books; registering new borrowers; assisting readers in making effective use of library facilities; doing general reference work; reading new books and book reviews; handling overdues and reserves; keeping statistics; reading shelves; have a working knowledge of book repair; ability to draw posters and execute displays and to be willing to accept night duty. REQUIREMENTS IN EDUCATION Graduated from an accredited high school and not less than six months of appropriate experience in a library of recognized stand- ing.
