Constructed bus alleys @ 3 schools • Redirected student loading and unloading areas to side streets • Employ 12 adult crossing guards for all dismissal times • Requested and received City support for: • Additional stop signs (le -Coolidge) • Additional crosswalk (Division-R Ave.) Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) 2 What have we done to promote student safety? • Constructed bus alleys 0 3 schools • Redirected student loading and unloading areas to side streets • Employ 12 adult crossing guards for all dismissal times • Requested and received City support for: • Additional stop signs (185-Coolidge) • Additional crosswalk (Division-R Ave.) Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) Overview of Grant Application Program Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) 3 History a Established in 1999 a Extended for budget allocation to January 2005 a Two legislative bills introduced to continue program • SB 10 (Soto) • AB 775 (Parra) o Grants coordinated through CalTrans Purpose a To improve/enhance pedestrian/bicycle safety and related infrastructure a Grants available to local government agencies • Requires 10% local agency match + Provides maximum reimbursement for single project of $450,000 Rating Criteria • Statewide competitive process a Proposals rated over six areas: 1. Identification and demonstration of need 2. Potential to reduce child injury/fatalities 3. Potential for encouraging walking and bicycling among students Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) 4 Rating criteria (continued) 4. Consultation and support for project by school -based associations, law enforcement, school officials, traffic engineers, etc. 5. Demonstrated coordination of related activities 6. Potential for timely implementation Project categories 1. Sidewalk improvements 2. Traffic calming/speed reduction 3. Pedestrian/bicycle crossing improvements 4. On -street bicycle facilities 5. Off-street bicycle/pedestrian facilities 6. Traffic diversion improvement Program schedule 2005 • February — local agencies submit projects to CalTrans District Offices e June — District Offices submit categorized projects to CalTrans headquarters e July — Statewide Project Recommendation Committee submits lists of projects for approved funding e Fall — CalTrans headquarters release list of approved projects Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) 5 So, where might we go from here? Form SR2S Task Force to: ✓ Assess traffic pattems for current conditions ✓ Review pedestrian accident data ✓ Identify any safety hazards ✓ Solicit traffic calming possibilities ✓ Map student walk routes ✓ Develop SR2S plan ✓ Etc. Possible membership could include: • Police Department • Traffic Engineer • School Principal(s) • Public Works Director • School District Official • School PTO Chairperson (2) • Other invitees Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S)
