NATIONAL CITY TRAFFIC SAFETY COMMITTEE
AGENDA REPORT FOR MAY 11, 2011
ITEM TITLE: REQUEST FOR INSTALLATION OF ADDITIONAL RED CURB
"NO PARKING" ADJACENT TO CENTRAL SCHOOL FOR
SCHOOL BU.S PARKING (BY: B. HARRIS)
PREPARED BY: Stephen Manganiello, Engineering Department
DISCUSSION:
Mr. Bob Harris, Director of Maintenance and Operations for the National School District,
has requested additional red cub "No Parking" for school buses to accommodate special
education student drop-off / pick-up adjacent to Central School. Based on demand, the
District will be providing two buses starting in July, which require additional curb parking.
Staff visited the site and confirmed that there is adequate existing red curb on E Avenue,
adjacent to the school to accommodate one bus, while providing clearance from the
school crosswalk at E. 9`h Street. In order to accommodate two buses an additional 20
feet of red curb is required. However, this would result in the loss of one passenger
loading parking space and since passenger loading is limited on E Avenue staff
recommends an alternate location for the second bus.
Staff recommends adding an additional 20 feet of red curb "No Parking" on Plaza
Boulevard adjacent to the school to serve as a staging area for the second bus. After
discussions with bus operators the drivers will use two-way communications to ensure
both buses don't arrive at the school bus stop on E Avenue at the same time.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends installation of 20 feet of additional red curb "No Parking" on Plaza
Boulevard adjacent to Central School to serve as a school bus staging area Actual
loading / unloading of special education students will occur at the existing bus stop on E
Avenue, adjacent to the school.
