Officer Stanich discovered the suspect was part of a group of transients living on the streets in the area of E.8th Street and Highland Avenue. Officer Stanich also found these transients were responsible for a large number of calls to the police department as well as causing the area businesses to suffer. Officer Stanich initiated a project to fix the problem. Officer Stanich spearheaded a team comprised of business owners, personnel from other City Departments, as well as fellow officers. Officer Stanich also employed "Crime Prevention through Environmental Design" techniques and her experiences as a former business owner to solve the problem. As a result, calls for service to the police department have dropped over 70% in this area, and the area business owners have expressed their sincere gratitude.
