Section 313 — Veteran's Preference:
In every open competitive examination, the Civil Service Commission will give a credit of five
percent (5%) of the maximum rating prescribed for the examination to any applicant who has
been engaged in any branch of the of the United States Armed Forces, including services in any
uniformed auxiliary, and who has been honorably discharged or retired from such service within
five years of his or her application for the examination.
The 5% credit in open examinations will also be given to the spouse of any person who has been
engaged in military service and has a service -connected disability of 100%. The 5% credit in
open examinations will also be given to the spouse of any person who died while engaged in
military service so long as the spouse does not remarry. Eligibility for this credit will be for life.
An additional credit will be given in any open examination to any applicant who has been
engaged in military service and been honorably discharged or retired from the United States
Armed Forces, if the applicant has a service -connected disability which has been duly
established pursuant to Federal law. This credit will be awarded on the basis of %z% credit for
each 10% of disability provided the disability is at least 30%. Eligibility for the base 5% credit
will be for life so long as it is granted in conjunction with a lifetime disability credit.
Any applicant seeking the benefits of this section must first attain a passing grade in the
examination in order to receive any credits. Any applicant seeking the benefits of this section
must submit proof of his or her eligibility for the credit at the time of application.
