ITEM TITLE: Resolution of the City Council of the City of National City authorizing the acceptance of a grant award of $180,900.00 from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Grant 2015 to conduct DUI and traffic related enforcement operations for the Police Department, and authorizing the Chief of Police to execute the Agreement of the award of the grant funds, and authorizing the establishment of fund appropriations and a corresponding revenue budget. PREPARED BY: Sergeant Michael Harlan DEPARTMENT: Police Depart nt PHONE: 336-4446 APPROVED BY: EXPLANATION: On June 24, 2014, the National City Police Department was approved to receive $180,900.00 in grant funds from the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The grant was approved for a one-year period beginning October 1, 2014. This award is based upon a grant proposal submitted to the Office of Traffic Safety for the purpose of reducing the number of persons killed or injured in traffic collisions and alcohol -involved collisions; to reduce fatal and injury hit & run collisions; to reduce the amount of motorcyclists killed or injured; and to reduce fatal and injury collisions at intersections, involving red light runners, and where unsafe speed was a factor. The grant funds allocated to accomplish these goals will be used to fund overtime operations such as DUI saturation patrols, and enforcement operations regarding speed, red light violations, dangerous intersection enforcement, motorcycle safety enforcement, twelve (12) DUI/DL checkpoints within the city limits of the City of National City, and the purchase of equipment needed during the implementation of the grant.
